Type 2 Diabetes
Most type 2 diabetics are overweight, middle-aged and inactive. They may not need insulin injections but controlling blood glucose by means of dietary control and physical activities are important.
Type 2 diabetes is by far the most common form of diabetes. Some 90% of diabetics suffer from type 2 diabetes. As type 2 diabetes most often occur about middle age, it is therefore called adult onset diabetes. It is also known as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIIDM) because type 2 diabetes is not necessarily caused by an inadequate insulin production, but rather the inability of the body to use it effectively. In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas of the diabetics continue to produce insulin, but the cells of the body somehow become resistant to its effect.
The typical type 2 diabetes patient is often overweight, middle-aged, and inactive. The cause of the type 2 diabetes are less well understood, but genetics and obesity are found to be significant factors to the onset of this form of diabetes. Comparison with type 1 diabetes found that there is a more solid genetic connection in type 2 diabetes. About 85% of the type 2 diabetic patients have a relative who has (or had) type 2 diabetes.
Type 2 diabetes may not have obvious symptoms and may go unnoticed for some time. As a matter of fact, many people only discovered that they have type 2 diabetes during a routine laboratory test of blood or urine.
