Monitoring Your Blood Glucose
- Monitoring your blood glucose is one of the key aspects of diabetes care.
Monitor Your Blood Glucose - Using the Diabetic Glucose Meter
It is a must to all people with diabetes to regularly monitor their blood glucose levels. This should be done daily. People with diabetes should record their blood glucose readings every time when they check their blood glucose levels. This is because they can use the blood glucose records to evaluate their entire diabetes care plan.
The only way to find out if your diabetic diet plan, exercise regimes, or weight loss management is helping you to reduce your blood glucose is to check your blood glucose.
Before that, you need to set your goal on the target blood glucose level you want to achieve. This target blood glucose goal is usually a range of values because it is impossible to get the same value every time. The recommended average blood glucose and A1C goals are listed below:
Average Blood Glucose and A1C Goals Plasma Value, mg/dl Whole Blood Value, mg/dl Before meal 90 - 130 80 - 120 2 hours after meal Less than 160 Less than 150 At bedtime 110 - 150 100 -140 A1C Every half yearly or quarterly - value should be less than 7%
You can monitor your blood glucose level by using a digital diabetic glucose meter. The method of use varies from one diabetic glucose meter to another diabetic glucose meter. However, most diabetic glucose meters require you to place a drop of your blood on a test strip that is impregnated with chemical. The chemical on the test strip will react with the glucose in your blood. Then, you insert the test strip with your blood on it, with the excess blood wiped off, into the diabetic glucose meter. The diabetic glucose meter will analyze the blood and will give you your blood glucose reading almost instantly.
