Insulin Pump

Insulin Pump

Diabetic patients may be given an insulin pump when their diabetes is difficult to control.  The insulin pump will dispense continuous and timed doses of insulin to the diabetic patients.  Insulin pump works by dispensing insulin through a catheter that is inserted into your skin.  The development of insulin pump for the infusion of insulin into the body offers a better method of treating diabetic patients with diabetic ketoacidosis.

One of the advantages of using the insulin pump includes reduced incidence of hypoglycemia.  In addition, a smaller amount of insulin is needed for control as it is injected directly into the bloodstream.  Insulin injection under the skin is no longer needed while the diabetic patients receive the infusion treatment through the insulin pump.

The insulin pump consists of a reservoir that keeps the insulin, a peristaltic pump and battery pack.  The peristaltic pump works by contracting and expanding thus dispensing the insulin into the body.  The energy to activate the insulin pump comes from the battery pack.
