Diabetes Care - Diabetes Dietary Control
- Diabetes Dietary Control is one of the key aspects of diabetes care.
Diabetes Dietary Control
Dietary control may be the first line of defense against diabetes, especially for people with type 2 diabetes who are obese or overweight. For some people with diabetes, a healthy and well-balanced diet in addition to weight loss and ideal weight maintenance are enough to keep the blood glucose levels normal. This will help prevent or delay the progress of many long-term diabetes complications associated with diabetes.
All people with diabetes except those who are very elderly should probably observe a diabetic diet. Eating indiscriminately should be discouraged when a person has diabetes because this will negate whatever diabetes drugs or insulin therapy the diabetic patient is taking.
The diabetic diet which is usually recommended by your doctor or Registered Dietitian follows the same principles of healthy eating that everyone should observe. There is no particular food that is absolutely forbidden. However, there are some kinds of food that are considered not suitable for people with diabetes. These include foods that are high in sugar content, food with high fat content, and processed food. These food should be taken in small amount or in limited quantities. In fact, people with diabetes can eat any food but in moderation. More flexibility in food choices may be allowed if the blood glucose level is well-controlled.
The diabetic diet that a person with diabetes should observe will form part of his or her diabetes care plan. The diabetic diet should include:
Food that is high in complex carbohydrate.
Plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits because they are rich in nutrients, vitamins, antioxidant, phytochemicals and fiber.
Food that is low in saturated and trans fat, cholesterol, salt and sugar.
Moderate amount of lean meat.
Moderate consumption of alcohol.
