Diabetes Treatment

Diabetes Treatment

The ultimate aim of diabetes treatment for anyone with diabetes mellitus is to maintain the level of blood glucose within the normal range without any significant fluctuation.  This means keeping your blood glucose levels not too high and not too low.  Generally, a diabetic can achieve this aim by taking any of these measures, such as:

When a person is diagnosed as a diabetic, treatment should immediately be started.  Diabetes treatment is usually lifelong.  A diabetic has to take responsibility for the daily adjustment of his diet and medication.  Once a person with diabetes has learned the fundamentals of his or her diet, insulin or oral hypoglycemic agent medications, and has stabilized sufficiently his or her daily physical activities, he or she is well on the way to leading a normal life.

As type 1 diabetes differs from type 2 diabetes, the treatments for both forms of diabetes would also differ slightly and would be discussed separately.

Diabetes treatment for Type 1 Diabetes

As type 1 diabetes is caused by the pancreas secreting very little or no insulin at all, it is therefore always treated with injections of insulin.  Treatment of type 1 diabetes with oral drugs alone is ineffective.  Hence, treatment may include combinations of insulin and oral drugs and the treatment regimens have to be tailored to suit the diabetics individually.  Dietary control is also important in helping to maintain your blood glucose levels.  If your diabetes is very difficult to control, you may need an insulin pump.

The only way to cure type 1 diabetes is by undergoing a transplant of the pancreas.  However, this is not always feasible as you have to first find a matching donor.  Besides, there is the possibility of your body rejecting your new pancreas and not to mention having to take a lifelong treatment with immunosuppressant drugs.

Diabetes treatment for Type 2 Diabetes

It is found that type 2 diabetes is more prevalent in people who are obese.  In fact, obesity is considered one of the key factors of a person's predisposition towards type 2 diabetes.  Because of this, many people with type 2 diabetes are able to control their blood glucose levels by taking exercise regularly and also by following a healthy diet or food plan to maintain an ideal weight.  Small amount of weight loss can also improve your blood glucose control significantly.  In fact, by just losing a few pounds, many type 2 diabetics can control their problem.  To be able to achieve this, you should follow general guidelines for a dietary control which encompasses a healthy diet and food plan, and seek advice from your doctor or dietitian if necessary.

Type 2 diabetes is a progressive disease.  When you have this form of diabetes for a long time, you will usually need to progress from requiring only food and regular exercise plans for treatment to adding diabetic pills and then at last, insulin.  Thus, it is important to be aggressive with your food and activity plans to delay this progression.
